Canon LPB 810

Review

When we reviewed this printer's predecessor, the LBP 800, it did not meet with our approval; the only point we could find in its favour was the free cuddly toy in the box.

It was relatively speedy, but quality was very poor. With the release of the low-cost 810, there has been quite a turnaround, and although this time we were denied a teddy bear, we are full of praise for this space-saving unit.

The 810 has, in fact, been stripped of all superfluous features; there's no LCD display, buttons or status lights - so all printing adjustments are made via the software package. But this lack of options means that the machine is simple to set up, and the no-frills software, while limited, is effective.

But the real selling point for this printer is its space-saving footprint.

A U-shaped paper feed, with a 125-page input tray on top of the unit, keeps it compact and, at 6.2kg, it is the lightest printer in our chart.

With a maximum resolution of 600x600dpi (dots per inch) the 810 has no problem coping with text, but output did suffer from some streaking on PowerPoint presentations. It certainly offers a real improvement over the 800, but if you want top-notch quality then you'll do better with one of the more expensive models. One thing to note is that the toner cartridges only last for 2,500 pages, so you'll have to stock up.
