AMD launches ‘Morgan’ Duron ahead of ‘Palomino’ Athlon

Mobile Athlon 4, Duron upgraded too

AMD today launched a 1.1GHz mobile Athlon 4 and a 900MHz mobile Duron to go with it.

It also presaged next month's launch of the desktop equivalent of the Athlon 4, with the released of a 1GHz desktop Duron based on the same core design.

Today's launches mark the first update to mobile Athlon 4 - based on the Palomino core - and Duron - based on AMD's Morgan core, derived from Palomino - lines since their introduction last May at 850MHz, 900MHz, 950MHz and 1GHz, and 800MHz and 850MHz, respectively.

The 1.1GHz Athlon 4 processor is priced at $425, the 900MHz mobile Duron at $130. Both prices are based on 1000-unit volume orders.

One company, at least, has paid up. Compaq said today it will use both parts in its Presario 1200 notebook series.

The 1.1GHz Athlon 4 comes in at the launch price of the 1.0GHz version, so AMD will have cut the prices of the other parts in the family. Ditto the mobile Duron line - the new part is cheaper than either of the original Morgan-based mobile Durons at launch.

CPU Clock Price in May Price now
Athlon 4 1.1GHz   $425
  1.0GHz $425 $290
  950MHz $350 $260
  900MHz $270 $230
  850MHz $240 $195
Mobile Duron 900Hz   $130
  850MHz $197 $100
  800MHz $170 $90

The 1GHz desktop Duron is also based on Morgan. AMD says it's shipping now, and should appear in boxes that will be announced later this quarter. The PC manufacturers who will make such announcements are probably waiting for the arrival of the AMD's Palomino-based desktop Athlon, which is expected around the middle of next month at around 1.5GHz. ®
