Compaq's 1GHz Athlon 4 notebook hits the shops
No sign of a Dell
Compaq's 1GHz AMD Athlon 4 Presario laptops have hit the high street.
We've seen a PC World advert offering one at £1699 inc VAT. This includes 192Mb SDRAM and a 20Gb hard disk. There's also an 8 speed DVD drive.
In fact PC World, and the other Dixons Group chains - Dixons, Currys, The Link - will be the only stores selling the kit becuase they've got an exclusive deal with Compaq.
Dixons securing exclusive deals prompted John Lewis and Comet to complain to the Office of Fair Trading that the company infringed competition law. The OFT didn't agree.
Compaq always said it was going to go with the Athlon 4 so the machine's arrival isn't that exciting. It'll be of a little more note if a Dell one appears. ®
