Intel's Desktop Roadmap

Updated Another day, another Intel roadmap.

Now we've had time to digest not only Intel's plan to promote the Pentium 4 even more vigorously, both on price and through the early retirement of the Pentium III - converted into top-end Celerons rather than killed off entirely, we can update Intel's release schedule for the next 9-12 months.

We now have the release timeframes not only of the 1.9 and 2.0GHz Pentium 4 processors, but the gigahertz Celerons brought well forward from their previous late 2001 to mid 2002 release schedules.

You can see the short-term plan clearly: the 26 August launches and price cuts allow Intel to steer its customers toward the current, lower-end P4s for the back-to-school sales. The second round of price cuts, on 28 October, allow it to take advantage of the Windows XP launch that month - all those folks needing new, faster machines to run the latest Microsoft OS - while preparing the ground for the first 0.13 micron P4s in November. ®
