AMD extending 3D Now! even further?

Seems so

AMD is working on further extensions to its x86 instruction set, according to an Nvidia staffer.

When asked whether Nvidia's nForce chipset drivers utilised AMD's 3D Now! extensions, said staffer admitted they did and later drivers will use "future AMD extensions".

What did he mean? Two possibilities emerge. First, AMD is adding to its processors support for Intel's SSE 2 instructions, having already added MMX and, with the release of its 3D Now! Profession ISA extensions, SSE 1 compatibility.

The other alternative is AMD's x86-64 ISA, but since these have clearly already been announced, why didn't the Nvidia guy call a spade a spade rather than a "future" digging implement?

We'd love to know, so feel free to drop us a line, AMD. ®
