Site blocking furore kicks off

It's been a quiet month so far on the flame front. However, the rather agreeable notion of our email bandwidth filled with harmony and peace between nations is, inevitably, a transitory illusion.

This is what happen when you give resident Reg whippersnapper Kieren McCarthy half an hour's unsupervised access to a computer. One 'Pan' writes:

You are rehashing an old story brought to attention again by Haselton because of a court date involving Paetec & Monsterhut - which has been delayed until June 4. Yur story is a disservice to the public and seems quite out of character with normal Register content.

1. MAPS does not hunt for open relays. Ordinary people submit nominations for RBL listing to MAPS whch only spurs a lengthy and arduous investigaive process by MAPS.

2. MAPS does not add a spammer to the RBL when an open relay is found. MAPS engages the spammer in discussions in hopes of educating the spammer (or spam haven) into correcting their behavior. Being added to the BRL is not easy to achieve and rarely happens.

3. MAPS does not block anything. MAPS shares a list of spammers and spam havens that the indivdual owners of systems are free to use as information for implementing blocks as they see fit.

4. The MAPS RBL lists are free.

5. ORBS and MAPs are not arch enemies. Neither group lists without notification.

There is a line from the old 1970's Saturday Night Live tv show that started, "Jane, you ignorant slut ....". Seems fitting here. I am really disgusted at the publication of such a pack of lies and peacefire instigated propaganda your article represents. UGGGGHHHH!!!!!!
