ntl and AOL hold hands

Is this the first sign of a beautiful relationship?

ntl has confirmed it is in talks with AOL Time Warner concerning "potential joint activity" but claims negotiations are at an early stage.

The two companies are in talks about a possible partnership using the cableco's broadband cable network in Europe to broadcast the media company's content according to the FT.

The pink paper also reported that AOL Time Warner had initially spoken to BT about a broadband partnership but that negotiations failed after the debt-laden telco was unable to deliver a decent enough broadband service.

The story has even prompted some to speculate as to whether AOL Time Warner will attempt to buy the cableco cum telco.

However, in a statement issued today ntl played down the talks insisting they were at an early stage.

ntl said: "We're constantly talking to a broad range of companies about a number of potential business agreements.

"This is quite standard within the industry and does not imply that any particular agreement is imminent.

"While it is true we are in the early stages in talks with AOL about some potential joint activity, apart from an outline term sheet nothing has been agreed at this stage and we have nothing to announce," it said

A spokesman for AOL UK echoed ntl's views adding that he wondered what all the fuss was about. ®
