Compaq AlphaServer claims SAP record

Small print: mid-range category

Compaq today claims a
benchmark record for mid-range servers in SAP BW, a component of mySAP Business Intelligence BI.

Up for the gold medal is the AlphaServer ES40 system with four 833 MHz Alpha processors using 8MB of memory and L2 cache Running Tru64 Unix and Oracle 8i, the machine "delivered an average throughput of 25 million rows per hour for the load phase, more than 108 million rows per hour for the realignment step, and more than 46,000 query navigation steps per hour."

No, it doesn't make any sense to us either, but boy does it sound fast.

The Megahurtz wars between Intel and AMD pale besides the benchmark antics of the big-iron Unix vendors.

IBM, HP, Sun and Compaq are obsessed with benchmarks... tpcs/specint/real-life Oracle processing are all-grist to the price/perfomance marketing mill.

But do many server customers actually care about raw speed - why should they, so long as their enterprise software works reasonably quickly and the hardware doesn't break down, and costs are in line with expectations? ®
