DoubleClick beats back privacy suits

Many Reg readers continue to find cookies indigestible. Is the recent Doubleclick ruling the springboard for a giant 'Big Brother' style e-conspiracy? Or is it a legitimate form of data gathering? Pat Mitchell favours the former:

I believe that this is an incredibly dangerous road we are traveling down with the FTC and Court decision on DoubleClick.

It should not be a question of whether or not DoubleClick has used, misused or disclosed personally identifiable information but what right it has to enter our homes and collect that information in the first place without our consent or knowledge of them doing so.

This in my opinion sets a very dangerous precedent because it establishes that right for commercial entities and others such as the Government to do this in the name of what is good for us. What other group will be next to decide they have a need to know what we are doing and when we are doing it? What part of our daily lives will "they" decide that needs to be tracked.

With the increasingly rapid improvements in technology I believe that it will not be long before these entities will be able to track whatever they think is necessary for our own good and that should scare the h*ll out of everyone.
