The visual exam
New Mexico has launched a scheme to let residents take the eye exam section of their driving test online.
No longer will prospective drivers have to trek down to the state's Motor Vehicle Division office to get their eyes assessed before hopping in a car to take the rest of the test. They simply log on, adjust the window on their screen to the size of a dollar bill, load up the software and get steered through a series of tests - from reading eye charts to recognising colours.
The tests, which can be viewed on the New Mexico state Website, evaluate distance, peripheral and night vision, and can even spot signs of glaucoma.
The authorities have also thought of a way to stop eye exam cheats, and participants will need a computer with a video conference camera to let driving test staff watch them do the tests, USA Today reports.
If people fail the sight exam they are not allowed to proceed with the rest of the driving test and are advised to visit the doctor. The "virtual field office" should be up and running by October. ®
