Samsung to make Quad Data Rate SRAMs

Now a gang of four

Samsung is backing the Quad Data Rate (QDR) high-speed memory chip standard and joining Cypress Semiconductor, Micron Technology, and NEC in developing the technology.

QDR is the multi-source standard for high-performance memories in switches, routers and other applications needing to operate at data rates above 200 MHz.

Mike Pearson, a director of Samsung Semiconductor, said: "We fully expect to put this SRAM technology in the hands of our customers by the Q4, 2001 timeframe."

The QDR co-development arrangement formed in 1999, with NEC coming on board in January 2001. The partners work together to ensure multiple sources for the QDR SRAMs by developing pin- and function-compatible products. The new devices have two ports independently running at double data rate (DDR), resulting in four data items per clock cycle. Depending on the applications, QDR SRAMs can more than double the SRAM efficiency. ®
