MacOS X to be updated within ten days

And: Euro retail chief quits as new Apple store located

Mac Rumour Roundup The MacOS X update that leaked out onto the Web last week should be available officially by the end of next week, according to Apple sources cited by MacOS Rumors.

The update will take MacOS X 10.0 to 10.0.1, according to Apple's slightly confusing naming scheme: MacOS ten ten-point-oh-point one. It's said to improve performance, particularly on Power Mac G3 machines, with numerous Finder operations being tweaked for speed. New hardware drivers will be included, along with a new kernel. Bugs fixed include Classic's ability to ignore its preference settings, and other apps' problems with preferences too.

Hopefully, that will stop half of the apps crashing, which is what's happening on our test system.

Still no sign of DVD or CD-R/W support, mind you.

AppleInsider

reports that Minneapolis has become the latest US city to gain its own Apple retail store.

It says sources claim Apple is currently recruiting staff for the chain of shops, which is set to stretch right across the US. The report notes: "Most of the hiring process for these locations is being filtered through personnel at the company's Laguna facility in Elk Grove, California. Craig Wells, an employee of the company, has been given the duty of sorting through resumes, sources said."

ThinkSecret

, meanwhile, has more pictures of the Palo Alto store's construction, and notes that the shop looks like it will contain multiple levels. That doesn't mean more than one shop floor - the gutted site will still need to contain admin facilities.

French site

MacGeneration

is claiming Apple Europe's retail channel supremo Thomas Lot has just bailed out of the company to join an online wine seller, ChateauOnline.

Lot joined Apple in 1997 as the head of Apple France. Last October, he was put in charge of a pan-European retail sales team. Given the considerable differences between each country's retail channel, Lot's task wasn't likely to be easy, and not helped by Apple US' desire to treat Europe as a single market much like its own territory. ®
