Game winds up players with 3am phone calls

Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me...

Time was when games kept you awake all night playing them. Now they keep you awake all night even when you're not playing them.

At least Majestic, Electronic Arts' latest offering, does. The game is designed to draw players into a conspiracy taking place in real-time.

Clues and information can be sent to players at any time of the day - or night - through various media: fax, email, instant messaging - even voice calls.

The idea is to make the plot as real as possible. EA seems, however, to have stopped short of hiring actors to follow players around, meet them and mumble something about "the 39 steps is" before apparently dropping dead in crowded public thoroughfares.

Right now, the game is only available to US players, but a UK release is in the pipeline, the Daily Telegraph has reported. ®
