DRAMarama (Act IV)

Contract 128Mb chip prices crash

The DRAMarama continues, with prices crashing below $6 in all three major world markets last month.

North America saw the biggest price drop - the rolling average for contract prices on 128Mb DRAM memory chips fell five per cent to $5.76 in North America for the 30-day period ended February 23, according to figures by research firm ISIS-LOR.

In Europe prices went down 3.3 per cent to $5.95, and down 3.5 per cent to $5.81 in Asia, Nikkei Market Access reports, via Asiabiztech.

Spot prices for 64Mb DRAM chips in the month nudged the one dollar mark.

Spot prices for 128MB modules (PC133) fell seven per cent to $36.81 in North America, 5.82 per cent to $37.38 in Europe, and 3.88 per cent to $37.15 in Asia.

The DRAM market has been suffering, along with the rest of the IT industry, from falling global demand for PCs. The gloomy situation has forced chip giants like Toshiba to issue profit warnings, and rival NEC to cut spending on its chip manufacturing. NEC said last month it didn't expect chip prices to pick up until 2002. ®
