Motorola to slash 7,000 jobs

That'll be 12,000 since December

Motorola is going to slash an extra 7,000 jobs from its personal communications workforce on top of the 5,000 jobs which went in December.

Motorola said the action was being taken as part of a continued effort to reduce costs in its wireless handset business while recalibrating for long-term
growth.

The UK's Swindon plant is expecting to suffer 700 job losses. They were warned in February their jobs might be cut. The staff cull is expected to be completed in the next two quarters.

Mike Zafirovski, president of Motorola PCS, said: "Unfortunately, this was a necessary next step for us to achieve renewal and stay competitive in today's dramatic business environment, particularly given the current slowdown in the economy." ®
