Intel, Compaq, DB invest $115m in Stratus

A W2K server that won't fall over

A consortium which includes Compaq, Intel and DB Capital is to plunge $115 million into Stratus Technologies, with the two computer firms also entering a strategic alliance with the firm.

Stratus offers a fault tolerant Windows 2000 server, which according to the firm, guarantees 100 per cent fault tolerance for its technology.

Compaq says it is entering the market so it will be able to offer fully fault-tolerant enterprise systems to its customers, while Intel's interest is mostly obvious, but includes promoting the Infiniband architecture.

The investment, $50 million of which is from DB Capital, is in the form of a preferred stock purchase, but Stratus will keep voting rights and its majority interest in the firm.

According to Stratus, shipment of its own x86 server family, ftServer, is about to commence.

Meanwhile, it appears from today's Denver Post that Intel may well make further investments in the area.

Although it has delayed building its own facilities into the ex-Rockwell site at the delightfully named Garden of the Gods Road, the Denver Post reports that it may buy a 312-acre site close to the one it already owns. ®
