VIA ups profit predictions – again

Chipset exports drive 22 per cent increase in expected earnings

VIA has said it will make even more money this year than it originally expected - or than it reckoned when it raised its pre-tax profit predictions earlier this year.

The PC market may be depressed, but VIA believes that demand for its core products - SoCs, integrated chipsets and DDR chipsets - will remain high.

The upshot is that VIA now expects to make NT$6.8 billion ($206.44 million) during the current fiscal year, a 22 per cent increase on the NT$5.58 billion ($169.40 million) it had previously predicted.

However, VIA is sticking to its revenue expectations - NT$30 billion ($910.75 million) for the full year - so while demand might well be high, it isn't increasing. VIA is simply seeing improved margins. That comes through a shift towards overseas sales - the company pointed to increased exports of its Intel Slot 1 and AMD Athlon-supporting Apollo Pro133A and Apollo KT133 chipsets. The latter now has a worldwide market share of more than 80 per cent, VIA claimed.

Next year, VIA will see its annual revenues rise 50 per cent, the company said, again driven by increased overseas demand for its Apollo chipsets. ®
