IBM rolls out display 4.5 times sharper than HDTV

200 pixels per inch

IBM is rolling out what it describes as the world's clearest computer display. The company claims the display is 12 times sharper than current technology or 4.5 times clearer than HDTV.

There is a wide range of disciplines that need high-resolution displays, IBM says, citing telemedicine, weather forecasting, publishing and graphics design as examples of target markets. The unit is capable of running at a resolution of 200 pixels per inch - over nine million pixels on a 22in screen. This, IBM says, makes the display as clear as a photograph.

IBM says it is only a matter of time before the technology migrates onto desktops and laptops, but for now the first units are being shipped to the Lawrence Livermore Labs. They will be used in conjunction with the ASCI White super computer to create 3D models to examine the ageing and operation of nuclear weapons. ®
