PlayStation 2 games make top ten…

...before console ships

PlayStation 2 software took 11 per cent of the US retail games market last week, before the next-generation console had even gone on sale, such is the consumer interest in Sony's new toy.

That statistic comes from market researcher PC Data, which also noted the two PlayStation 2 titles, American football game Madden NFL 2001 and beat-'em-up Tekken Tag Tournament, both made it into the retail games top ten, charting at numbers five and eight, respectively.

Hysteria is how the research company describes such sales activity, and it's hard to disagree, what with the rapidity at which stores appear to have sold out of their - admittedly meagre - supply of machines, and the frantic bidding going on on the likes of eBay and Yahoo! Auctions.

"It's a definite measure of the hysteria around PS2 that people that are willing to buy software with no guarantee that they'll have hardware to play it," said PC Data's games analyst, Matt Gravett. "They're all revved up with no place to go." ®
