1.33GHz Athlon on streets by December?

Swedish retailer removes product

Dustin AB, the Swedish computer retailer, today tippexed all Web site references to the 1.33GHz Athlon from its price list, following discussions with Microtronica, its AMD distributor (story: 1.33GHz Athlon 'for sale' - in Sweden).

"The product shouldn't be out on the market yet, Microtronica also got a call from AMD in US," the company told us this afternoon by email.

This morning we spoke to a Dustin sales rep who assured us that the part was for sale - but he was unable to tell us when the product would be in stock.

So what does this all mean? First things first, the 1.33GHz Athlon reference was not a typo. Second, Dustin - or to be more precise Microtronica, in Sweden jumped the gun. Third, Microtronica is due for a kicking from AMD.

But most important of all, the existence of a 1.33GHz part on a Microtronica data sheet indicates very strongly that AMD is prepping a 1.33GHz launch announcement PDQ.

Comdex Fall would be a logical place to make such an announcement. That in turn would mean 1.33GHz chips on the street in December.

However, we don't see much chance of volume production this side of Christmas. Anyone know different?

Update

A staffer from Dustin told IDG Sweden today that it would have 1.33GHz chips in stock at the beginning of December. ®
