AltaVista Inc gets jobs hatchet out…

...again

AltaVista Inc is to sack some of its workforce in California, the company will announce later today.

According to reports the company will also centralise its operations at its HQ in Palo Alto.

It's not how many employees will get the chop but workers in Europe are safe.

Vesey Crichton, AltaVista Europe's marketing and strategy director, told Reg this morning that the downsizing in California was just concerned with the US.

"This will not effect anything in Europe," he said.

To prove his point he said that the European operation was performing out of its skin, with its portal currently serving more than nine million pages a day compared to just a million at the beginning of the year.

In May AltaVista Inc sacked 40 people in a bid to cut cost and save money.

And earlier this month CMGI, Alta Vista's parent company, announced it was taking measures to improve its "path to profitability"

Perhaps AltaVista, as a CMGI company, is cutting jobs to help CMGI along its way. ®
