You'll never have to name that tune again

A truly daft use of advanced technology

Here's an interesting idea that will never work. Sony has come up with an amazing way for you never to miss out on a particular song again. Using this staggering piece of machinery - called an eMarker - you can track down any song you hear on the radio. No more waiting for mumbling DJs or forgetting the name of that band.

Oh no, using the plastic orange oval (designed as a keyring thang) all you have to do when you hear that amazing tune is click a button. That's it. Then plug the eMarker into your PC and type in the name of the radio station et voila - not only the name of the tune and the band but also extra info, audio clips of it and other songs from that band, links to CD retailers and any other nonsense that can be attached to this unique marketing device.

Sounds amazing don't it? Well, no, not really. The incredible eMarker is essentially a clock with a PC port. Assuming you know the radio station you were listening to - which you won't - this piece of kit (going for $19.99 in the US) could be overridden by that odd habit of looking at your watch.

Plus, how many times have you felt the need to do this in, say, the last ten years? Are you going to carry round an orange oval for your entire life in the vain hope that you're capture that one song you were after? No, you're not. If you buy one of these we're afraid that you are a gizmo geek and there is nothing we can do for you.

Wanna know more? So did we. For example, how it links to the PC etc etc (probably USB). However, after a six-hour PR delay (still haven't got back) and a scouring of Sony's catalogues we still have no more information on the bleedin thing. Probably just as well.

Apart from that, not a bad idea. ®
