Best of the Rest Mostly chip stuff

Randomly thrown in. It's a kinda treasure trove

"I think Intel's reputation as a chip company is better than Microsoft's, and you can take it from there."

Really!!! And how many successful chip companies sprang up in the last couple of years ? Maybe a thousand ?! Besides, its Toshiba that's doing it, anyway.

If Microsoft is going to start making chips, then perhaps Intel should press the button on very sophisticated operating systems

Too late to reach the button- the floor has already caved in for them. If there's anything preventing users from moving away from Wintel, its Microsoft, not Intel. If you can run windows on powerpc, people would still buy the computer but Linux, FreeBSD, BeOS, solaris all run on Intel - whoever cares?

The problems Intel has been facing of late are largely of their own making. AMD made no secret of their work on Athlon - they published reams of technical data about the design concepts while they were still working on it- Intel rather stupidly assumed that the only competent people in the world worked for them (or perhaps they believed they could rapidly crush AMD with Celeron). Further, I suspect they had no real interest in improving Pentiums as they probably planned on pushing all users to I-64 architecture in the long run - why build something faster in X86-32 when the goal was to push everyone to I-64 - an Intel exclusive domain (no troublesome cross liscening agreement - charge what they like)

The real fact of the matter is that AMD has been the real innovator in the X86 community for the past 3 years - not Intel. AMD developed the concept of SIMD - which they structured to run under MMX to avoid introducing a new CPU mode which would have reguired modification of existing OSes. Intel - did everything in its power to resist this innovation. AMD designed the first superscalar 3 pipe line FPU - and brought to market the first true 7th generation X86 CPU.

AMD did not try to force an unwanted overly expensive memory technology upon the computing public - Intel did and still is. AMD has been aggressively working on significant enhancement of the Athlon core while developing a newer 8th generation CPU - the SledgeHammer family which will bring 64bit computing to the desktop in a much more manageable manner then I-64 ever could. AMD has clearly established itself as the PC industry leader by maintaining a strong commitment to innovation and cooperation with other industry members. Intel, on the other hand, has continued to act like a spoiled child - insisting that everyone do things their way and their way only. F--- Intel. As Lee Ioacooca (Spelling?) once said - lead - follow or get out of the way. Intel damn sure isn't leading - and they continue to try block everyone else so it is way past time to tell them to get out of the way.

Re: Yet Another Government Cock Up

Just makes me angry how people have to wait months to have an operation on the NHS and the government are throwing major money away on projects they can't seem to understand.

I bet ICL and whoever else they have paid to do some work are laughing now though! No support costs I guess....plus the skip hire industry will probably do a blinding trade.

Have the government got some sort of IT task force? I don't know, but they should have and it better not be made up the muppets they have there at the minute! Why did I vote for this lot????
