Intel video camera can go walkabout

USB gizmo operates independently

A couple of years back, Intel had a dinky little digital camera poised for launch, only to pull the plug on the project at the eleventh hour. Now Chipzilla is having another bash with the new Pocket PC Camera.

The PPCC is pretty cheap at $149, and differs from Intel's Create & Share range of cameras in that it can run independently of a PC and record video as well as still images. The USB device has 8MB of memory allowing up to 128 640x480 still images or two minutes of video to be stored.

When the camera is reattached to its PC, users can do all the usual stuff like make video phone calls, create personal Web pages, send e-mail postcards, create PC movies, edit photos and play PC camera games.

The eight-ounce camera has a CCD sensor for enhanced low-light performance and a four-element lens with a 50-degree field of view. When connected to a PC through the supplied USB cable and monitor cradle, it provides unlimited video capture and still image snapshot capabilities. An auto setting lets users capture five shots in two seconds, and a self-timer lets everyone get in one of those embarrassing 'aren't we all having a lovely time' pictures.

We're expecting one any day now and will regale you with more details when it arrives. ®
