IBM makes first sale of Ultrium LTO storage

It's a start on making it a standard

Twenty years of American TV history is to be archived on IBM digital tape. This is the first sale of the storage product based on the Ultrium LTO standard, IBM claimed. Both HP and Seagate are also backing the new technology standard, which they all want to push out into the wider market.

IBM said that Ultrium has greater capacity and speed at a similar price to earlier storage technologies. It offers up to 100GB per cartridge capacity. If you want to read more about LTO (Linear Tape-Open Technology) click here

Analysts have said that tape format storage will be a big market in the coming years. IDC says that it will almost double by 2004 to $4.6 billion.

Viacom has bought the storage system to archive Paramount's 'Entertainment Tonight' shows. Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed. ®
