Cyrix Richardson site up for sale

Photo comes Via e-mail

A drive-by mole has sent us definitive evidence that the former Cyrix site in Richardson, Texas, is up for sale.

Click for full size imageThe photograph shows that the site, which is a total of 174, 825 square feet, is For Sale, with real estate firm The Morse Company handling the deal.

We can vouch for the authenticity of the picture. Ten years ago, we visited the site and met ebullient Jerry Rogers, the ex-CEO, who, when he saw us, bellowed down the corridor: "Who let that man in here?"

Later, Rogers proudly showed us round the property, which sported a mock gravestone marked "Intel Inside RIP" in the reception area, and, less funny but more importantly, had walls covered with patents Cyrix had registered, none of which Intel was able to challenge or affect.

Cyrix, of course, was acquired by Via and earlier this year we exclusively reported a mass exodus of staff, including top engineers, who were unhappy with the decisions being made about the chip technology developed at Richardson.

Now it seems Richardson TX will just be a footnote in the madhouse which is the chip industry. According to information we received, the last 20 staff at the facility were moved to Plano a month or two ago.

We have one lasting momento of our visit, a small Swiss Army knife with the Cyrix logo stamped on the side. The same year, AMD also gave us a similar knife with the AMD logo stamped on the side. The AMD logo wore off years back - the Cyrix logo is still as fresh as a daisy. ®
