AllAdvantage coughs-up Register bribe

They've sent in the cash, so here's the story…

In November we challenged AllAdvantage to make a donation to charity, in exchange for a story appearing on The Register. In the true spirit of Christmas, AllAdvantage sent us a cheque made payable to Children In Need. Now we keep our half of the bargain.

More than 70,000 UK Net users have signed up with AllAdvantage and are being paid to surf. Since launching in the US back in March, AllAdvantage has attracted more than 3.5 million users, some of whom are coining in thousands of dollars a month in exchange for sitting at their PCs.

In the UK, AllAdvantage members get paid at a rate of 31p per hour for surfing. If they refer any new members to the service, they get an additional 6p per hour – 3p if those referrals in turn refer new members. One UK member has already earned £600 in one month, according to the company's latest press statement.

The service is paid for by advertisers on the AllAdvantage ViewBar, which inhabits your screen once you sign-up for the service. Called 'directed advertising', the ViewBar changes its content every 20 seconds and downloads user profiles to the advertisers' databases.

The company's European operations director, Robert Glasgow, said: "The get paid to surf concept has already demonstrated its massive popularity in the US, and worldwide over 3.5 million members have joined AllAdvantage in just the last seven months."

Back in November, AllAdvantage invited IT journos to attend a briefing at which it would discuss its membership figures. All attendees would, the company's PR agency told us, be given £10 which they would be invited to donate to the Children In Need charity.

The Register's Tim Richardson was unable to attend but asked for the cash anyway. After getting a blunt refusal, we upped the ante and said we wouldn't write about the membership unless AllAdvantage gave us £100 to give away. Well, we're The Register, we're meant to be cheeky.

Fair play to AllAdvantage who entered into the spirit of things and proved themselves a generous bunch. ®
