OpenEBS v0.4 is live, uses Google container scheduling tech

Kubernetes grunt-powered community storage software

Multi-app enterprise storage startup CloudByte has announced v0.4 of OpenEBS, hyperconverged block storage for stateful applications on the Kubernetes platform.

OpenEBS is container-native, open-source storage software taht's sponsored by the startup. In January we wrote: "OpenEBS is containerised storage which, via its also open-source Maya orchestrator, provides the ability to tier the storage to S3-compatible storage with intelligent caching. OpenEBS has snapshotting, replication, high availability, and backup to S3 features."

It is available under the Apache 2 licence.

Kiran Mova, CloudsByte engineering VP, wrote of the new version: "OpenEBS delivers container-native storage by using Kubernetes (as opposed to running on Kubernetes) itself as the underlying framework for scheduling and storing configuration data.

"There are also efforts under way for the upcoming release to make use of Kubernetes LocalStorageManager, Kube-Dashboard and CNCF projects like Prometheus, FluentD, Grafana, Jaegar, etc. for managing and monitoring the storage functionality."

Murat Karslioglu has been appointed VP solutions at OpenEBS. He was in the Advanced Development group at HPE Storage, and previously at Nexenta Systems in the CTO office. CloudByte's chairman is Evan Powell, ex-Nexenta CEO. It's a small world.

Powell said: "OpenEBS seems to have struck a nerve amongst users that want simplicity and the ability for each workload to have its own storage controller. It's a real pleasure to work with Murat again – an original thinker who in his career has helped to deliver storage-based solutions to some of the most demanding enterprises. His focus on solutions and partnerships will help us further simplify adoption of OpenEBS."

There is an OpenEBS Slack channel and you can try v0.4 here. ®
