Apple grounds AirPods launch with shipping delay

No worries, just plug your old earbuds into the… oh, right

Apple is going to miss its own deadline for shipping the AirPods wireless headphones.

The Cupertino iPhone slinger told the media that it "needs a little more time" to get the cordless headset ready for release.

"We don't believe in shipping a product before it's ready," Apple told multiple outlets.

Apple introduced the AirPods last month as part of a new Fall product rollout that also included the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, as well as a new Apple Watch model.

The wireless earbuds had been touted as one of the preferred methods for use with an iPhone 7 and 7 Plus line that no longer contains a 3.5mm headphone jack. People have to either use headphones equipped with a lightning connector plug or pair the phone with a set of wireless headphones (when they actually arrive).

Apple has not said when the delayed AirPods might now reach consumers.

Word of the delay comes less than 24 hours before Apple plans to unveil another set of new products. That event, taking place Thursday in Cupertino, is likely to include the introduction of a new MacBook Pro model that will be equipped with a small touchscreen display bar above the keyboard.

The wireless buds are not the only Apple project that might be delayed. A report from Apple Insider cites documents from the city of Cupertino that report Apple's planned "spaceship" campus will not hit its targeted opening date thanks to construction delays.

The report says that because of lingering work on landscaping, street work, and other construction projects that have run long, the new 13,000-person campus will probably not be open until at least the middle of next year. ®
