New Snapdragons coming

Qualcomm has crafted three new ARM-compatible Snapdragon system-on-chips. These aren't the next-gen 800-series processors you may be expecting for 2017's top-of-the-line Android smartphones – instead they're extensions to Qualy's mid- and lower-tier designs.

There's the new Snapdragon 653 which is a slightly faster version of the 652 with the ability to access up to 8GB of RAM. Then there's the Snapdragon 626, a step up from the 625 with Qualcomm's TruSignal signal-boosting tech thrown in. And finally we have the Snapdragon 427, which has a better CPU and GPU than the 425, and includes TruSignal, too.

According to Qualcomm, all three of the new SoCs include an X9 LTE modem capable of Cat 7 downlink speeds of up to 300Mbps, and Cat 13 uplink speeds up to 150Mbps; LTE Advanced Carrier Aggregation with up to 2x20 MHz in the downlink and uplink; and an enhanced voice services (EVS) codec for VoLTE calls.

We're told the Snapdragon 653 and 626 chipsets will be "commercially available by the end of 2016." The Snapdragon 427 is "expected to be in commercial devices in early 2017."
