Seagate to dismount and fsck its ClusterStor?

'We're unable to provide any other information at this time'

Amid the looming closure of its Havant facility in the UK, Seagate has nothing to say about the future of ClusterStor, its HPC disk array product line that was engineered there.

When we learned Seagate was planning to close its Havant site with 325 job losses, we realized that this was the ClusterStor development shop. ClusterStor arrays are sold by HPE and SGI, and also through an OEM deal with Cray, the supercomputer manufacturer.

We asked Seagate: "What will happen to the ClusterStor array line when the Havant factory is closed?"

The answer we received, via a PR agency, was a statement about the Havant facility closure, explaining the reasons behind its planned shutdown. Among other things, it noted:

Given the current [HDD demand level] conditions, Seagate's path forward requires a more efficient manufacturing footprint and highly optimized product portfolio. To that end, Seagate has made the difficult decision to ramp down several company facilities, including the development centre in Havant, UK.

About ClusterStor, nothing was said: "Seagate is unable to provide any other information at this time."

It could have said the ClusterStor line of array products will continue. It did not. Is ClusterStor not going to be a part of Seagate's highly optimized product portfolio? Seagate is not saying, so draw your own conclusions from all this. ®
