Broadcom plans quarter-BEEELION expansion in Malaysia

Embiggening its operations in Penang

Broadcom is going to tip US$250 million into Malaysia, announcing plans to expand its operation in Penang.

The company has told local media it wants to add 175 engineers to the office, as well as 60 staff to its global supply chain operations.

The Star Online identifies product development and testing, supply chain planning, logistics, and procurement as targets for expansion.

The company hopes to have the new hires on board by the end of 2016, and in the press conference reported by The Star Online, the company's VP of global operations Ooi Boon Chye said partners in Malaysia would also get more business from the company.

He nominated “device testing, wafer probing, wafer bumping, package assembly, wafer level chip scale packaging and wafer level ball grid arrays operations” as activities that will be expanded.

The news will be welcomed by Penang, which has been bracing itself for the fallout from Intel's global 12,000 headcount reduction. Chipzilla has around 10 plants in the Malaysian state. ®
