Arista cuddles storage giants with leaf switch

Big buffers, 100 Gbps support

Arista is touting interoperability with the likes of HP Enterprise, NetApp, EMC, Nutanix and PureStorage in its latest data centre release.

Its 7280R Series is designed to sit alongside the 7500R spine platform, and the company says it packs deep buffering and “Internet-scale route tables” in a compact form factor, with the company's EOS providing extensibility.

The Arista release says the product particularly targets IP storage, routing, and digital media applications.

Key specs are:

  • Between 4 GB and 32 GB of buffer memory;
  • Port speeds of 1/10/25/40/50/100GbE;
  • NEBS (Network Equipment Building System) support for carrier deployments.

The company says it can run a million wire-speed routes. Supported protocols include MPLS, segment routing, and Ethernet VPN. Up to 128,000 MPLS, Generic Routing Encapsulation, VXLAN and IP-in-IP tunnels are supported.

There are four models in the 7280R Series, offering 48 ports at any speed from 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps Ethernet; 36 x 10/40 Gbps ports and 12 x 100 Gbps Ethernet; 48 x 10 Gbps SFP+ ports with 6 x 100 Gbps uplinks; or 48 x 10 Gbps copper with 6 x 100 Gbps uplinks.

The big buffer space, Arista says, helps it cope with large amounts of east-west traffic with a minimum of blocking and low latency.

The 7280R is shipping now. ®
