Lost: One Scality CMO

Syed Hoda ejects less than four months in post

Syed Hoda is Chief Marketing Officer at Sight Machine. No surprise there, except that he was CMO at object storage software startup Scality, joining in December last year, and leaving in April this year. That's a CMO stint of just three months, signalling a sudden and deep misfit between person and post.

Hoda was recruited to lead Scality's global marketing strategy and accelerate growth worldwide. He came with pedigree, having been CMO of ParStream, an Internet of Things (IoT) analytics company, which was bought by Cisco.

Previously he'd been a senior Cisco exec with a variety of management roles in the US, Europe, and Asia. For example Hoda was General Manager of Cisco’s Emerging Solutions Group in San Jose, California.

At the time Scality founder and CEO Jérôme Lecat said: "We are excited to have Syed Hoda join our senior leadership team. He has successfully led marketing functions through the “growth” phase, in both larger and start-up environments throughout the world.

"As our new CMO, Syed is charged with leading Scality’s evolution within this billion dollar industry to capitalize on our company’s growing, global opportunity.”

Three months later he was the wrong guy for the job. A Scality spokesperson said: "Syed Hoda left Scality for personal reasons." That's it.

Scality has been having some success recently, with an HPE deal and investment, and Dell OEM deal as well, plus being used in LANL's Trinity supercomputer set-up. Maybe it decided it didn't need a CMO after all.

We listened hard at the doorway to this storage exec Game of Thrones, but try as we might, all we could hear was: "Hoda, Hoda, Hoda." ®
