US-CERT advice says kill Quicktime for Windows, quickly

Unsupported software with known bugs has no place anywhere

US-CERT has echoed The Register's advice to the effect that if you're running Quicktime for Windows, it's time to delete it. Right now.

The United States' Department of Homeland Security's Computer Emergency Response Team's advice comes after Apple took Quicktime for Windows for its long drive down a country road.

As noted by Trend Micro at the time, that leaves a couple of wonderful bugs – ZDI-16-241 and ZDI-16-242 – to live forever.

That's led US-CERT to repeat The Register's – and, to be fair, Apple's helpful-if-whispered – recommendation: get rid of the software entirely.

Since US-CERT lives in the Department of Homeland Security, its advice will (we hope) carry sufficient clout in US government circles that sysadmins get busy in the mass-uninstallation.

At 20 years old, it's not so great a surprise that Apple would eventually tire of writing free media software for Windows users.

With any luck, the advent of HTML5 will help kill off the other great Web video bug-incubator, the perennially-flawed Flash. ®
