Look out, Windows Phone 8 users – yes, both of you – here's ... Windows 10 Mobile

Smartmobe OS lands on some lucky handsets

For the past few months, peeps keen to run Windows 10 Mobile have been able to buy handsets with the new OS installed. Now patiently waiting Phone 8.1 owners can upgrade their smartphones to the operating system – well, some of them, anyway.

"Today, we're pleased to begin the roll-out of Windows 10 Mobile to select Windows Phone 8.1 devices," Microsoft's Michael Fortin in a blog post.

"Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high-quality experience for our customers. The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device."

Not everyone is going to be able to upgrade right away – it's mainly Lumia users who are in luck this time round. The full list is as follows: Lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, and the MCJ Madosma Q501.

Windows Phone enthusiasts (yes, there are some) might be disappointed by that list, since it doesn't include some handsets that have been able to run preview builds under the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program.

Microsoft says that this is because it has added "significant new innovations," which means that for some older phones there will be an "impact on the customer experience." That's going to be cold comfort to some smartphone users. ®
