Microsoft crams more tools into its Azure-in-a-box technical preview

Redmond wants silver lining to cloud stack

Barely a week after releasing the first preview of its cloud-in-a-box Azure Stack, Microsoft has doubled down with new tools for the code base.

Azure Stack, released on January 29, is aimed at larger companies that want to run a hybrid cloud system, with Stack on its on-premises servers to protect data but with the ability to hook up to outside providers.

"We're making additional Azure PaaS services and DevOps tools available for you to deploy and run on top of your Technical Preview deployments," said the Azure Stack Team in a blog post. "This represents the first installment of continuous innovation towards helping you deliver Azure services from your data center."

The latest update pack includes a revised software development kit that brings PowerShell and cross-platform CLI support to the Stack package – something Redmond promised at launch. Developers will get native support for Visual Studio with the latest release and new Web Apps features.

Within the Web Apps section of the code, Microsoft has also bundled in tools for developers to run SQL and MySQL resource providers, which should make the code a lot more attractive to the database market. However, Microsoft warned the code is a very early preview.

Also included in the download is a new set of Azure Stack GitHub Templates, along with some workload examples to get developers started. More are likely to be forthcoming at Microsoft's BUILD developer's conference in March, which will be held in San Francisco. ®
