Optimus Prime goes under the hammer

Transformers Peterbilt 379 tractor heads to auction

Film buffs with deep pockets and a really big garage should consider moseying on down to the forthcoming Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, where the 1992 Peterbilt 379 Optimus Prime tractor will go under the hammer.

The custom rig appeared in three Transformers movies playing the automotive version of our fave Autobot. According to the auction blurb, "when the film's production designer showed Michael Bay a photo of the enormous Peterbilt tractor, the director was immediately taken by the lines and size of the truck, even through he know he would face intense criticism for his choice, in the same way he did for selecting a GM Camaro in place of the original VW Beetle known as the beloved robot Bumblebee."

The Peterbilt will be sold "as is", and isn't street legal, but would look rather fetching parked on your front drive. There's no reserve price, but we suspect it'll go for a hefty wedge of bucks.

For those with less space, the Bumblebee GM Camaro from the fourth Transformers outing, currently owned and autographed by Michael Bay himself, is also up for grabs.

Again, there's no reserve, so it's anyone's guess how much the successful bidder will have to stump to secure the vehicle featuring "fuel-injected Corvette LS3 engine, six-speed overdrive transmission, custom suspension, mini tubs, Wilwood brakes, plus added stunt extra caliper, 9" Ford rear end, touchscreen navigation stereo system, custom three-piece racing wheels, Nitto low-profile tires, hideaway headlights, custom Halo LED yellow headlights", and much, much more.

The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction runs from 23 to 31 January 31. There are details here. ®
