BoMed: Oz weather bureau network struggles to its feed

Network outage froze updates

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology seems to be returning to normal, after an unspecified network failure downed much of its operations this morning.

The BoM's sparse statement attributed the problems to “a physical networking issue”.

Weather observations and weather radar were taken offline by the issue. The BoM's statement says it put contingency plans in place to make sure it could still communicate severe weather warnings.

When first reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, weather information on the Bureau's public services (and third parties) was stuck at 6am Friday.

As The Register writes this, observations are now current for 2pm and the radar appears to be working. However, the Bureau has not yet issued any follow-up statement. ®
