Exablox shows off its ring, adds variable-length NAS dedupe

On-premises storage management added to cloud option

Exablox is adding variable-length deduplication to its fixed-length, inline data reduction functions to make its object-based NAS arrays more efficient. An on-premises management facility is also available.

Variable-length uses a sliding window to determine the optimal boundaries for deduplication. These two selectable deduplication modes are combined with inline compression for maximum data reduction.

A OneBlox Ring backup share can use variable-length and compression, while a share for primary storage on the same storage can use fixed-length and compression.

Exablox said it can now increase data reduction rates up to 20:1 (with suitable data). Customers can increase a OneBlox’ capacity by up to a claimed 95 per cent and get costs down to as low as $0.03/GB.

The company claims this feature is “well suited to interoperate with backup/recovery software from major vendors, including Veeam, AppAssure, CommVault and others.”

The firm has also tweaked its management facilities, with a Private OneSystem on-premises management system complementing the existing cloud-based facility, OneSystem SaaS.

Private OneSystem runs as a virtual machine in the customer’s data centre, so it’s still remote from the array.

Variable-length deduplication is a free upgrade for all current OneBlox 4312 customers. Private OneSystem is available from Exablox channel partners. Access the site for more information here. ®
