Safe-mail.net goes titsup. Storage failure blamed

Fourth day of outage

The secure email service Safe-mail.net has been out of action since Wednesday, Nov 4, following a “major storage hardware crash”. No further technical details are available.

About 80 per cent of user data was unaffected “as we had already moved it to a new system during the last few months,” the Israeli company said in a statement on its website. The rest of the data is to be salvaged from the crashed storage or restored from back-up.

At time of writing, Safe-mail.net is in “critical maintenance” mode and the company is using the downtime to purge some 250,000 user accounts that were “involved in activity which violates the Safe-mail.net Agreement and policy.”

The company has attracted some notoriety; a January 2014 Forbes article dubbed it the “email service the Dark Web is actually using”.

All in all, a bad week for secure email providers, with the Swiss service ProtonMail caving into a ransom demand to stop a crippling DDOS attack. Surprise, surprise that didn’t work. ®
