Slurp-happy reseller SCC: We want to buy a mobile services biz

More data centre services plays for Midlands tech dynasty

Midlands tech dynasty SCC has switched on the searchlight to hunt for acquisition targets in the mobile space.

The reseller-cum-data-centre-services provider is on the acquisition trail, and a week ago took a minority stake in hosted voice and unified comms-as-a-service player SIPCOM.

James Rigby, CEO at SCC, said: “The next and probably final area of the converged world that we need to have in the portfolio is mobile.

“We are out there looking, it’s at the research stage, it’s a big old market and there are lot of players…we will make a move in the next few months.”

The company runs three data centres (two in Birmingham and one in Fareham) that provide more than 1,800 racks and 14Mv of power. Currently those bit barns are 67 per cent occupied.

Data centre services are a key and growing element of SCC, with top line numbers coming in at £26m, and £40m forecast for fiscal ’16 ended 31 March.

The organisation sells infrastructure services, voice, data and SCC MD of the services Mike Swain said it wants to add managed services on SIMs and multiple network providers, paid for per user on a monthly basis.

This will cover pads and smartphones for mid-market punters and corporate enterprises with “one service and one bill”.

SCC has around 500 customers that actively trade with it each month and is currently cross selling services from the acquired businesses – M2, Fluidata (data and connectivity) and SIPCOM – to its customer base.

The company seems to be competing less with former arch rival Computacenter and are coming up against companies including acquisition hungry mid-market focused Daisy Group, a point with which Rigby agreed.

“We are probably treading a similar path to Daisy Group, but we started from a completely different end of the spectrum – we are from the IT world and they are from telecoms”. ®
