iOS 9 update set to bork 'hundreds of thousands of EU businesses'

Can’t pair, won’t pair, says iZettle

Mobile merchant terminal company iZettle has warned its users that the Bluetooth issues within Apple's operating system could seriously affect payment processes, and has strongly warned merchants using its kit not to upgrade to iOS9 until it says so.

iZettle provides its users with card readers allowing them to take payments using iPhones linked to the readers via Bluetooth. The company says that:

The problem causes Bluetooth to be switched off when you try to pair the Card Reader Pro. This means that you can’t pair the card reader with your iPhone or iPad, and consequently can’t use it to take card payments.

The Register understand that Apple recognises the Bluetooth issue, and is currently working on a patch for the new OS.

On the support page iZettle says that If your card reader was paired before you updated, it will remain paired after you update. However, if you unpair your card reader, you won’t be able to pair it again.

There is, however, a workaround and iZettle has explained the process to get your jesus phone to talk to your mammon device if you do make the mistake of upgrading to iOS9.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing said recently “iOS 9 is also off to an amazing start, on pace to be downloaded by more users than any other software release in Apple’s history.”

That sound you can hear in the background ... that’s the iZettle support desk crying. The payments company says it has "hundreds of thousands" of users. ®
