Pope Francis' first act in America: Halt iPhone 6S, 6S Plus deliveries

Pontiff faulted for failed Friday fanboi fondlephone festivities

Is Pope Francis a secret Android fan?

We only ask because the delivery of iPhone 6S and 6S Plus orders will be delayed in New York due to a visit by His Holiness.

We're told UPS will stall deliveries in six Manhattan ZIP codes (10001, 10007, 10017, 10021, 10022, 10023, and 10029) while the Vicar of Christ is in town Thursday and Friday, clogging up the streets with the faithful.

The holdup will mean that packages scheduled to arrive on September 25, including ordered Apple iPhones, would not be delivered on that day. Fanbois can pick up their packages from UPS offices – or wait until Saturday or Monday (depending on the shipping method) to receive their Apple handset.

Apple unveiled the 6S and 6S Plus earlier this month at a special event in San Francisco. The smartphones will sport the same case design and screen size as last year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models, but will be powered by a new A9 CPU and will offer additional touch commands and gestures, as well as an improved camera with the ability to capture 4K video.

The iPhone 6S has been available for pre-order through Apple and its mobile carrier partners since September 12, though anyone who hasn't already ordered their phone will have to wait 1–2 weeks on the 6S and 3–4 weeks on the 6S Plus if they buy online from Apple.

Apple is set to deliver ordered iPhones to fans on Friday, the same day it makes the new iPhone available in retail stores. Apple and carrier stores are slated to begin selling the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in stores at 8 AM local time.

Once an occasion that prompted fans to line up days in advance, the retail launch of the new iPhone models has become less of an occasion in recent years as Apple has begun delivering the phone to customers on release day.

If rumors are to be believed, the iPhone 6S Plus could be in particularly short supply, as one of Apple's manufacturing partners was said to be having problems assembling the 5.5-inch display hardware. ®
