Xen urges another upgrade to get OpenStack humming

It's merely a maintenance release but your cloud is probably worth maintaining

Xen 4.4.3 is upon us and the Xen Project recommends “that all users of the 4.4 stable series update to this latest maintenance release.”

Users of the open source hypervisor could be excused for having upgrade fatigue of late, as the effort asked them to upgrade the 4.5 version of the code in late June and the project has also suffered a lengthy string of nasty bugs.

This time around the Project says the upgrade addresses some security issues and offers stability improvements to EFI support on some x86 silicon. The headline item is “A number of bug fixes that affected libvirt, in particular when used with OpenStack.”

OpenStack users tend towards the larger end of deployments and therefore to larger fleets of virtual machines and less risk appetite.Plenty will therefore be on Xen 4.4, so an update to improve reliability and performance is a reasonably big deal for users and for Xen. The Project should care because OpenStack can use several hypervisors. Amazon Web Services may use Xen, which gives it plenty of kudos, but the emerging tribe of OpenStack users can make other choices. ®
