Samsung looks into spam ads appearing on Brits' smart TVs

Samsung? Pah. More like Spam-sung, amirite?

Samsung is launching an investigation into British customers receiving spam ads in their smart TVs.

Sammy appears to be sending ads directly to some TVs using the notification bar, which was previously used to alert system updates.

One reader got in touch with The Register to complain there has been no explanation or solution from Samsung to opt out of the ads. A number of users have also complained of the problem via Facebook and Twitter.

One said: "Why are ads appearing in the notification bar on my TV?! Never buying Samsung again." Another added: "Same issue here, how do we turn this off?"

It is not the first time Sammy has got in trouble for spamming its customers. In February it denied it was deliberately inserting ads into peoples' privately owned films following complaints from Australians.

At the time Sammy said the adverts appeared due to an "error", and has announced an investigation.

The same month a change to the company's privacy policy language warned customers their own TVs were spying on them. The company hastily published a revised policy.

A spokeswoman said of the latest customer woes: "We are aware of a situation that has caused some Smart TV users in the UK to experience programme interruption.

"We are currently conducting a full and thorough investigation into the cause as our top priority. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience experienced by our customers." ®
