Sysadmin jailed for a decade after slurping US military docs

American gov contractor goes rogue? We've heard this before

Military contractor sysadmin goes rogue? That sounds familiar...

According to a USAF Notice of Suspension (PDF) directed at Glenn's wife, her husband pinched the classified docs on 17 June, 2012. Following an investigation his employment was terminated in October 2012.

The investigation showed that Glenn had disabled and overridden the system security protections which were designed to prevent Secure Internet Protocol Router Network (SIPRN) account-accessed files from being exfiltrated onto removable media, and subsequently copied those files to a DVD disc.

Glenn then cleared the log files, unsuccessfully attempting to delete evidence of his unauthorised actions. On 27 August 2012, however, investigators seized the hard drives from Mr Glenn's classified and unclassified work computers as well as discs and other hard drives from his work space. Court documents show they were unable to locate the DVD he created which contained the improperly accessed information.

The DVD was obtained by Honduran police after a search on Glenn's home, following a warrant obtained on 11 March 2015. A DVD containing the same classified files Glenn copied onto a DVD disc on June 17, 2012, was then discovered.

Additionally, a Synclogy Network Attached Storage Device (SNASD) was also discovered. The SNASD contained all of the same classified documents which had been found on the DVD disc. The SNASD was encrypted.

Glenn had taken electronic documents in a file labelled “JTFB PST.pst”, taken from the e-mail account of JTF-B's commander. Those documents seemed to be focused on US military activities in the Middle East. The eight documents listed in court files are:

  • A. Seminar 1, Strategic Seminar Series, dated 28 January 2012
  • B. Seminar 2, Strategic Seminar Series, dated 21 March 2012
  • C. Seminar 3, Strategic Seminar Series, dated 14 May 2012
  • D. Information Paper on Qatar Key Issues
  • E. Information Paper on Saudi Arabia Key Issues
  • F. Information Paper on United Arab Emirates Key Issues
  • G. Information Paper on Bahrain Key Issues
  • H. Electronic mail message dated June 13, 2012, Concerning Security of US Personnel in Iraq

There is no available information regarding Glenn's intended use for these files.

Glenn's case was 9:14-cr-80031-KAM USA v. Glenn et al, heard in the Southern District of Florida. ®
