Google Californian warehouse workers file to form union

Poor conditions? News to us, says operator Adecco

Workers at a Google Express warehouse in San Francisco have filed to form a union, citing poor conditions, low wages, and lack of benefits.

The Teamsters Local Union 853 announced that 140 workers at the facility have filed for a representation election.

Google Express Services, operated by Swiss HR biz Adecco, provides products shipped from local businesses to consumers on a same-day or overnight basis.

Workers are required to sign short-term employment agreements with Adecco that limits them to two years before the company lets them go, said the union.

The workers allege poor working conditions, including damaged equipment, cracked floors and failing electrical systems resulting in fires.

“The reports we have received from workers at Google Express paint a bleak picture,” said Local 853 principal officer Rome Aloise.

“It's surprising that Google, a company that prides itself on the treatment of its workforce, would allow this behavior to continue at Adecco," the officer added.

A spokeswoman for Adecco told the Wall Street Journal the company has not received complaints or reports of poor conditions from employees at the Palo Alto facility.

“We are fully committed to ensuring that all of our offices, branches and client assignment sites are safe environments for our colleagues and associates,” spokeswoman Vannessa Almeida wrote.
