US beats Iran as Japan's tincan footie team wins robot World Cup

England team's early exit suggests tactical naivety will continue after robo-apocalypse

American and Iranian robots faced off on Wednesday in a battle which even the most positive end to the nations' recent nuclear talks could not avert.

The RoboCup featured 175 robot teams from 47 different countries and regions, according to the China Daily.

For the teams – who competed in several size categories – the RoboCup is an opportunity for robotics and artificial intelligence researchers to employ their machines for enjoyably difficult tasks.

The Brain Kids, a team from the Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan, managed to win the major competition in the child-sized humanoid final, scoring a 1-0 victory against their Chinese rivals ZJUDancer, from Zhejian University.

Representing England, the University of Hertfordshire's Bold Hearts managed to emulate our national team, meaning they were inevitably knocked out by the French in a 2-0 second-round defeat, again in the child-sized category.

The Bold Hearts put this down to stability issues on their blog – an excuse Roy Hodgson would do well to remember.

The match between the American THORwin team and the Iranian team – called Baset Adult-Size – ended 5-4 to the US.

It was the final match of the adult-size humanoid final, and a bit of a shock result. Iran has recently emerged as a major power in the world of tincandroid football with the RoboCup finals being held in Tehran last year. ®
