Need to build apps for the cloud?

Get into the Bluemix

PROMO A cloud coding competition is coming soon, brought to you by The Register in partnership with IBM. For now all we can tell you is that IBM’s Bluemix platform will play a part in the proceedings.

So let’s get the ball rolling with this call to developers to sign up now for a free IBM Bluemix trial.

So what is Bluemix

For most developers it is a case of when not if they will need to develop, create, and deploy applications in the cloud. But how to get starting something - not such an easy task unless you have the technical know-how in-house. Also how do you manage this cost effectively or the potential to scale for success?

IBM has thrown a giant hat in the ring with IBM Bluemix, a Cloud Foundry-based platform for building, running and managing applications. In IBM’s words, you get to “use a combination of the most prominent open-source compute technologies to power your apps. Then let Bluemix handle the rest”.

In practice this means that you get to concentrate on developing cloud apps without needing to know how to install, configure or integrate them - that’s Bluemix’s job. Because Bluemix is based on Cloud Foundry, you can tap into various runtime frameworks - such as Node.js, PHP, Python Ruby - and services. On top of this, IBM supplies a bunch of DevOps and Middleware tools, accessed via dashboard for you to create, view, and manage your applications and services as well as monitor your application's resource usage. The Bluemix dashboard also provides the ability to manage organisations, spaces, and user access.

Last but not least, Bluemix is hosted on SoftLayer Data Centres, and does elastic provisioning too.

So don’t miss a beat, sign up for your free IBM Bluemix trial today. ®
